December 2007 | On Our Radar
Seattle’s Lil’ Helpers
By Amy Pennington
This year, we rang some of our favorite local business leaders to see what they were giving away. We had a feeling they might be in hues of “green”…the very best color of the year. Whether it’s a thank you to your boss (yes, you should buy one) or a small hostess gift (yes on that one, too), we’ve got a line-up that would make any eco-elf happy.
Workshop: Theo Chocolate
Elf: Autumn Martin, Chocolatier
“As far as the gifts I am giving away this year, so far I have thought of chocolate! (This is obvious). I am making homemade bath oils and preserves using organic local fall and winter fruit and herbs. I also like literature on how to create and maintain a sustainable home and kitchen.”
Workshop: Parsons PR
Elf: Joanie Parsons, owner
“I give Artisan gifts from the local farmers’ markets including candles, soaps, hand lotion or hand-crafted journals. I always go to the Ballard and Fremont Markets and the Phinney Neighborhood Association’s
Craft Fair.”
Workshop: Pioneer Organics
Elf: Ronny Bell, Owner
“The gift I would give, and I actually do this for weddings, is the gift of an experience. I find a restaurant I think is really special and espouses an ideal that I have, like Tilth, and I buy a gift certificate to eat there.”
Workshop: Seattle Tilth
Elf: Karen Luetjen, Executive Director
“One idea I had was to get family members who use a lot of bottled water a new stainless steel bottle so that they can reuse it again and again and again. I got mine from REI, so I can try to convert them to generating less of those plastic bottles.”
Workshop: Sustainable Industries
Elf: Nik Blosser, President
“We usually give food or wine (I’m spoiled as we can give the family’s organic Pinot Noir from Sokol Blosser). We also generally make a donation to the Food Bank or another cause. Of course, a Chinook Book is a fabulous gift that keeps on giving, too!”
Workshop: One Earth, One Design, Greenwood
Elf: Sandy Campbell, owner
“Recycline toothbrushes, made (mostly) from 100% recycled yogurt cups and (when done) you send it back to the company and they grind it for recycled plastic lumber. Also, Badger Balms have hand cream, foot cream and skin cream. They are out of Pennsylvania and are all natural with no synthetics. My favorite is the healing balm. I put it on at night and Vicki likes the sleep balm.”
