November 2007 | Letters to the Editor

Puff, Puff, Pass

Last month we received an influx of heartfelt and impassioned letters regarding the insert ad for a brand of natural cigarettes. Responses ranged from shock to horror to general bewilderment:

“I enjoy your magazine thoroughly,” wrote a reader in Bellevue, WA. “In the recent issue I was horrified to find a big, fat card-stock insert glued into the spine advertising cigarettes of all things — alongside ads for yoga studios and naturopaths. What’s next? Ads from Big Pharma?” Seattle’s Maggie Rimmer requested, “I would prefer to be able to enjoy the content without being subjected to ads for products so diametrically opposed to your mission and philosophy. In short, practice what you preach,” while in LA, Herb Tums waxed poetic : “Ah, yes, the joy of an ‘organic’ death. I wish you more integrity in the future.” Via email, Steve Dunmore opined, “Your image as an alternative spiritual and sometimes political publication has been shattered in one moment of bad judgment.” Ouch. “I’m not going to unsubscribe…yet,” threatened “Disappointed” via email. “I’ll wait and see if there is an apology in the next issue.”

Well, “Disappointed” and brethren, thank you for raising your voices to defend the Conscious Choice you know and love. We hear you loud and clear — no more cigarette ads, natural or otherwise, in Seattle’s Conscious Choice.

And Then the Smoky Clouds Parted

My name is Liz Tucker and I am a resident of Dallas, Texas. I was in LA this weekend to experience and participate in the Global Mala Project. Your September issue called to me amongst the vast array of holistic and wellness publications that were on display at the conference. I absolutely devoured the magazine from cover to cover on the plane back to Dallas. I found each and every article to be poignant, significant, inspirational, and exceptionally written.
